A 2024 analysis found 70% of 36 protein powders sold in India did not contain the protein their labels claimed. Here is the arithmetic that catches it, and everything else worth checking before you buy.
In April 2024, a group of clinical researchers published something uncomfortable in the journal Medicine. They bought 36 popular protein supplements off the Indian market and sent them for independent analysis — protein content, heavy metals, pesticide residue, aflatoxins, steroids. They called it the Citizens Protein Project.
Roughly 70% did not contain the protein their labels claimed. Some delivered around half. Fourteen percent contained fungal aflatoxins, and 8% showed pesticide residue.
That is the environment you are shopping in. So rather than another article telling you that protein is important, here is the specific, checkable stuff: what the words on the tub mean, the one piece of arithmetic that catches an inflated claim, and how much protein you actually need before any of this matters.
What whey actually is
Whey is one of the two proteins in milk. When milk is curdled to make cheese or paneer, the solids become curd and the liquid left behind is whey. For most of history it was a waste stream. It is a fast-digesting protein with a high leucine content, which is what makes it useful after training.
Concentrate, isolate and hydrolysate
These are not grades of quality. They are stages of filtration.
- Whey protein concentrate (WPC) is filtered to roughly 70–80% protein by weight. The remainder is lactose, fat and minerals. It is the cheapest per gram of protein and it tastes better, because some of what gets filtered out is flavour.
- Whey protein isolate (WPI) is filtered further — typically to 90% protein or above — stripping most of the remaining lactose and fat. Worth paying for if you are lactose sensitive or counting calories tightly.
- Hydrolysate (WPH) is pre-broken into shorter peptide chains. It absorbs marginally faster and it is noticeably more bitter and more expensive. For almost everyone this is a solution to a problem they do not have.
Most blends, including our Whey Protein, combine concentrate and isolate. That is a cost and taste decision as much as a nutritional one, and it is a reasonable one.
The label, line by line
The arithmetic that catches an inflated claim
This is the single most useful thing in this article. Take the protein per serving and divide it by the scoop size in grams.
Our whey states 24 g of protein per 30 g scoop. That is 80% protein by weight — consistent with a concentrate-isolate blend, and you can check it yourself against the nutrition panel. Now try it on a tub claiming 24 g of protein from a 40 g scoop. That is 60% protein by weight, which no whey — concentrate, isolate or otherwise — actually is. Something else is making up the other 40%, and the ingredient list should tell you what.
A label that gives you protein per serving but never states the scoop weight in grams has removed the denominator. You cannot do the division. Treat that as the answer.
Per 100 g versus per serving
Serving sizes are chosen by the manufacturer, which makes cross-brand comparison of "per serving" numbers close to meaningless. Protein per 100 g is a fixed basis and it is the only fair way to compare two tubs — or to compare cost. Divide the price by the total grams of protein in the tub and you have the number that actually decides value.
Amino spiking
Protein content is often measured by nitrogen content. Free amino acids and compounds like glycine and taurine contain nitrogen too, so adding them raises the measured "protein" without adding usable complete protein. If glycine, taurine or generic "amino acid blends" appear high in the ingredient list of a whey product, ask why they are there. In a genuine whey product, whey should dominate the list.
The rest of the panel
- Added sugar — under 3 g per serving is a reasonable bar.
- FSSAI licence number — it should be printed on the pack. Its absence on a product sold in India is a serious flag.
- Batch number, manufacture and expiry date — required, and the thing you need if there is ever a problem.
- Full ingredient list — proprietary blends that hide individual quantities behind one total are a way of not telling you the ratio.
How much protein you actually need
Two numbers get confused constantly in India, and the confusion sells a lot of powder.
The ICMR-NIN Recommended Dietary Allowance for Indian adults is 0.83 g per kg of bodyweight per day. That figure is a public-health floor — the intake that covers the requirements of nearly all healthy sedentary adults. It is not a target for someone lifting four times a week.
The ISSN position stand on protein and exercise puts 1.4–2.0 g/kg/day as sufficient for most people training to build or maintain muscle. For a 70 kg lifter, that is 98–140 g a day against an RDA of about 58 g.
Distribution matters too, though less than the total. Schoenfeld and Aragon (2018) suggest roughly 0.4–0.55 g/kg per meal across at least four meals to maximise the muscle protein synthesis response. The mechanism behind that is the leucine threshold: a meal needs somewhere around 2.5 g of leucine in younger adults to trigger the response maximally, and 25–35 g of a high-quality protein generally clears it.
Do you even need a supplement?
Honestly: often not. The ICMR-NIN dietary guidelines are notably unenthusiastic about protein supplements, and they have a point. If you can hit your daily target from dal, rajma, chana, paneer, curd, eggs, soya and milk, you have solved the problem — usually more cheaply per gram, and with fibre and micronutrients attached.
Where a powder earns its place is arithmetic, not magic. Reaching 130 g a day on a vegetarian Indian diet is genuinely difficult; it takes planning and a lot of volume. A 24 g shake closes that gap in ninety seconds. That is a convenience argument, and it is a legitimate one. It is just not the same as a nutritional necessity, and anyone selling you the second thing is overselling.
A 60-second buying checklist
- Divide protein per serving by scoop size. Under about 70%? Ask what the rest is.
- Compare protein per 100 g between brands, never per serving.
- Work out cost per gram of protein, not cost per tub.
- Check whey is the first ingredient, and look for amino spiking further down.
- Find the FSSAI licence number, batch number and expiry date.
- Added sugar under 3 g per serving.
- Buy from a seller you can hold accountable — counterfeits of well-known brands are common, and a genuine product bought from a bad channel is not a genuine product.

Frequently asked questions
Is whey isolate better than concentrate?
Not for most people. Isolate is filtered further, so it is roughly 90% protein by weight against 70–80% for concentrate, with less lactose and fat. That matters if you are lactose sensitive or cutting hard on calories. For general muscle building, total daily protein matters far more than which of the two you use, and concentrate costs less per gram of protein.

When should I take whey protein?
Total daily protein matters more than timing. The old 30-minute anabolic window has not held up well in research. Spreading protein across 3–4 meals of roughly 0.4 g/kg each is a more useful habit than rushing a shake after training.
What should I check on the packaging before buying in India?
Look for the FSSAI licence number, protein content stated per 100 g and not only per serving, the scoop size in grams, a full ingredient list, and a batch number with a manufacture and expiry date. A product that states protein only per serving, without a scoop weight, has made the key number impossible to verify.
